This book is the result of years of painstaking research by Kythera’s local living treasure and historian and draws on the island’s long tradition of oral history.

In her prologue Eleni Harou writes: “Myrtidiotissa and her pilgrimage to Kythera are associated with the most beautiful and picturesque customs of the Kytherian people which we must respected along with our history in order to ensure the preservation of our national and cultural identity at a time of sweeping changes in our society. This book is my humble contribution to the celebration of 150 years since the building of the new church of Myrtidia.”

The project was originally funded by the Kytherian Association of Athens (Sindesmos Athinon) and with the insistence of George Poulos, then Secretary of the Kytherian Association of Australia, the book was translated into English allowing the wider English speaking community the opportunity to read and understand the history of the Monastery of Panayia Myrtidiotissa from the discovery of the icon to the present day!
