GREEK CAFES & MILK BARS OF AUSTRALIA

Join us as Leonard Janiszewski & EffyAlexakis the renowned historian and documentary photographer and creators of the In Their Own Image: Greek-Australians National Project Archive deliver an enthralling presentation on a history familiar to many Greek and Kytherian families in Australia.

In every suburb and country town was the Greek cafe or mil bar – open all hours, 7 days a week.  These family-based food-catering enterprises ‘transformed’ Australian popular culture.

Janiszewski’s and Alexakis’ presentation will not only investigate the overall development of Greek cafes an milk bars across Australia, but also the personal stories of those involved – proprietors, waiting staff and customers.

This lecture is a fundraiser event for the digitisation of the In Their Own Image: Greek-Australians National Project Archive with the State Library of New South Wales.
